Scratch an Idge
I dropped another newsletter stitch in bypassing a Friday night show with Texas bottlerocket Idgy Vaughn on July 2—- holiday weekends (it seemed like there were two a month) were always a threat to attendance, though you could never predict if the turnout was gonna be numbersome ‘er nothin’. Maybe it was new-venue enthusiasm, but maybe it were because everybody loves a saucy redhead— without promotion, twenty-eight people paid ten dollars each to hear Idgy warble her earnest hill-country compositions, one of which celebrates a Redbone Hound, and features a collective “A-roooo!” in its chorus—-

Also unmentioned in text was Birmingham’s own Simone Durand, a late-added opener for Saturday’s event with Tommy Womack— she brought out a passel of friends who already knew how she’d warm the stage, and we thank them all for being part of the night— pic below—

Friends of The Moonlight--
Might take 'til tomorrow to get the gunpowder outta your nostrils, and the stringy BBQ flossed into memory--- so let's take a look at what a busy week we have at Moonlight on the Mountain---->
** Monday, July 5--- OPEN MIKE NIGHT, $5
Once every two weeks we give over the stage to walk-ins, those who might have the chops to come out on top, as determined by a panel of impromptu judges--- two songs each player, five bucks from every person who walks in the door, makes a nice little cash prize after everybody's showed us their best. We have discovered some pretty impressive local talent the last coupla times--- who knows what might happen this week? 7:30pm
** Wednesday, July 7-- REBECCA LOEBE, SUE SCROFA, $12
Southern charm and gypsy blood, indeed--- Becca flits across the country all year, soaking up influences and intonations that make their way into her delightful and ever-changing set list... she's called it Post-Brontosaurus Indie Folk Crunk, which is her way of telling you not to expect the ordinary. Alyssa Crisswell then takes half the night with her evolving band, or parts thereof, to flesh out her adventurous pop songlets, making fresh use of keyboards, ukelele, and her en pointe vocals.... refreshing, engaging, and totally original. 7:30pm

**Thursday, July 8-- THE BLACK MAGNOLIAS, NICK HILL-- $12
The quest for our post-college audience continues, though music fans of any age will find plenty to like in tonight's pairing--- a trio of imaginative young women, guitar-keyboard-guitar, and magically-melded vocal harmonies, putting wings to original tunes and some thoughtfully-chosen covers. Nick made a memorable showing at our Open Mike, his confident folk-pop strutting placed him prominently in our memories--- lucky boy, he's friends with the Magnolias, which earned him their invite to share the evening. 7:30pm
The Black Magnolias, July 8 2010, 7 present
**Friday, July 9-- SETH WALKER, $10
A last-minute addition to our schedule--- we get more excited about Seth's visit with every listen to his recent release, Leap Of Faith----“Seth Walker serves Southern roots guit-pickin’ and blues songcraft with ease and grace. Echoing a variety of artists, from Jimmy Reed to Ray Charles, he slips expertly from loose-jointed shuffles to organ-inflected feel-good fare and a whole lot more. An old soul with new fingers, Walker cooks from start to finish.” - Westword Magazine

** Saturday, July 10-- TOMMY WOMACK, $10
We're unable to think of another Kentucky-bred MTV-era thrash-band rabble-rousing
provocateur-turned-prosemaster humorist-minstrel--- or at least one deserving of more hyphens. So maybe you better come see this one--- since he's calmed down
(several years now), his genius with the language has moved to the forefront, and
you'll go home with some unforgettable phrases in your head. 7:30pm
