Tommy/Toby Moon
In the years since the closing of the original Moonlight, a prodigious number of performing songwriters proliferated, giving us a rich field of little-known talent with which to stuff our schedule. This week was an example— of course, we were familiar with Tommy Talton, and how he’d figured into the bold fabric of classic Southern Rock—but with so many fresh names coming to our attention, we assigned to ourselves to the regular presentation of unknowns, and the cultivation of an adventurous audience to support them. An iffy proposition, to be sure— if we’d had stockholders, it’s likely that the bookings would have been less speculative. But since we were already out on a limb, we figured that the tastiest fruit was at the ends of the branches, and usually worth the reach.

Friends of The Moonlight---
A last little flurry of activity closes out a very successful month--- we had several fat crowds, where everybody learned just how chummy it can get in the place--- even had a sold out show, with every square foot occupied--- some fun! Two very satisfying Open Mike nights, with several serious local players coming in to sample the stage--- and a handful of private events that turned out, well--- swimmingly! With that in mind, we installed three industrial-strength ceiling fans just today--- so now these 95-degree days might not pose such a threat to a room packed with happy folk---
Check this weekend's lineup---
Thursday, June 24th--- TOMMY TALTON, 7:30pm, $10
Southern rock took an inevitable turn down a country road in the very early '70s, and one of the guys at the steering wheel was Tommy--- in partnership with Scott Boyer, he formed the band Cowboy, and created several truly classic albums and compilations throughout the decade. As a go-to session player, he put a unique flavor on half the records that came out of Capricorn Studios in Macon GA, the hub of all things Allman, with history-making side projects for people like Bonnie
Bramlett, Alex and Livingston Taylor, Kitty Wells, Dickey Betts, Johnny Rivers, Martin Mull (!)... 'Nuff history--- back from some down time relaxing in Europe, he's been touring in front of his own R&B/blues band since 2008, releasing new material and reclaiming the musical real estate he developed back when. Our friend Macey Taylor will be on hand to add keyboards to Tommy's otherwise solo show. (43 present)

Friday, June 25th-- TOBY LIGHTMAN, and ASLYN, 7:30pm, $12
What do YOU call entertainment? Couple of very bright, friendly, energetic young women with experience and musical chops, really good voices, writing songs strong enough to have earned placement on several of TV's best current series' soundtracks... that's a pretty good start on a night well-spent, you think? So what if you haven't heard of them yet--- we're in the business of happy surprises, and if you can risk a sawbuck on a safe gamble, we're convinced you won't regret it. Lots more detail--- and photos!--- on the Moonlight Calendar. You know--- on the webpage--- or how 'bout right here--->

Saturday, June 26th--- DAVID LUTES, 7:30pm, $10
Texas produces its own brand of genius--- we're lucky that so much of it is musical. Fresh off a great year of special awards and recognition from that state's best-respected music-biz biggies, David's had to regain perspective by touring and playing solo in places where folks aren't familiar with his exalted stature. His two-disc new release, "Big Top', is what's got him in all this high cotton--- it features contributions from first-choice Texas players, all in service to Lutes' singular sonic vision. Sometimes he sounds like Lyle Lovett setting out on an Elton John tune, other times you'll hear Coltrane by way of Paul Simon.
“Lutes ignores genres while fusing jazz, pop, rock, Americana and anything else that fits, and everything seems to fit.” -San Antonio Express News

Sunday, June 27th--- ED WHITEHURST, 6:30pm, no cover
We don't have much advance info about Ed--- just that he lived, worked, and played in these parts earlier in his life, honed his tastes and skills as part of a Denver-based band, and then traveled the world in his career as an English-to-Japanese software translator.... cross-cultural experiences are often the source of the best songs, and we are curious to hear Ed's interpretation of one native son's life out yonder. Early start on this one... let's give him a respectable audience, what say?
Ed Whitehurst, June 27 2010
Not much planned for the upcoming holiday weekend--- but if you're looking for a place to bring friends for a sunset party, we got the time and the place...happy to host you! Email us with your questions and requests--- many thanks!
