Thanks for Giving Moon
One of the singular characteristics of The Moonlight’s physical plant was its trapezoidal shape, something that worked to peculiar advantage in regards to acoustics. Short 90-degree zigzags of painted sheetrock yanked left and right through the space at large, in opposition to one continuous wall that sliced an oblique angle along the western side of the building. Those off-parallel surfaces (and some long-past-its-prime carpet) formed a space that gently tumbled high and low speaker frequencies into an especially pleasing mixture, so that pretty much every seat in the room was a good one—- a coincidental blessing, for which all of us were constantly grateful.
The decor, however, never quite struck the same perfect tones, rather reflecting the owner’s utilitarian tastes for neutral wall colors, functional downlights, and an arcane collection of framed knicknacks and tchotchkes hanging everywhere in the near-dark. His one inspired visual upgrade appears for the first time this week in the artist photos below—- a profuse celestial starfield, in muted glow behind the stage’s backdrop curtains. It took him hours to staple those strings of Christmas tree mini-lights to the wallboard, not really knowing how it was gonna look, but dang if the Sparkle Plenty effect weren’t worth all that effort, if he sez so himself.

Friends of The Moonlight---
Much as we hate to see it go, this Fall has been a good one, with beautiful colors and many warm days to enjoy--- one extra thing for which to be thankful on Thursday of this week. After our short pause for a deliberate celebration of gratitude-- somehow expressed through mounds of starchy foodstuffs, season-climax football contests, and awkward conversations with long-estranged cousins--- we'll bolt together the pieces of the weekend with two strong shows on Saturday and Sunday--->
Saturday the 27th-- DRAGONFLIES, $10
Recent experimentation with drum-based combos have shown us that percussion can fit in here as well as anything else---though we'll never call ourselves a rock club (seems to be a-plenty of those scrapping for business already), we aren't opposed to hosting higher-energy performers--- especially when there's a day-old load of calories and butterfat to be burned off. Tonight we have local four-piece favorites Dragonflies in the house, bringing their mixture of originals and well-chosen cover songs out for a Moonlight ramble.
Members of the band include Gigi Scott on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Michael Moore on lead vocals and lead guitar, Mike Callahan on harmony vocals and bass, and Eric Fulgham on drums. We're told that they will emphasize their own tunes for this appearance--- something they don't always choose to do-- and will build the evening from a more acoustic start, to a stronger display of chops as the set heats up. Come early, you'll be sufficiently revved to hang through to the end! 7:30pm

Sunday the 28th-- PIERCE PETTIS, and GRANVILLE AUTOMATIC, $15
Many of you need no introduction to Pierce, since we have brought him to The Moonlight stage more than once, most recently as one of our first-choice re-opening performers in early May... though he travels the entire country as an honored icon of new-century American songwriting, we are fortunate that he's a native and resident of northeast Alabama, which often keeps him close at hand, and strongly connected to this tail-end stretch of Appalachia. Pettis stands apart from all others in his unique style of thoughtful, literate, and engaging story-songs... it always raises our profile two notches when he graces us with one of his performances. 7:30pm

A recent show at Eddie's Attic in Atlanta introduced Pierce to the delightful new duo Granville Automatic--- though they are no strangers to the challenges and rewards of their own careers in professional music, Elizabeth Elkins and Vanessa Olivarez still have a sprightly, fresh energy fueling their focused campaign to play, and captivate, every corner of the republic. They are fresh off a tour of the Northeast, an experience charmingly captured on video, and viewable on the Facebook link below.... all the more impressive in light of the blue-ribbon quality of their songwriting and harmonies. 7:30pm
